In 2016, the City of Fernie, located in southeast BC, was selected to host the ISSW in 2020 (now rescheduled to 2021). Fernie is a city with small-town mountain charm, character, and friendliness, complete with the amenities and services for this conference.
The Fernie Memorial Arena, the Fernie Community Centre, and the curling rink will comprise the conference venue. These centrally located and adjoining buildings will provide an easy flow between sessions, and are located within a short walking distance of most lodging options. Additional meeting space is located nearby, which can be booked for breakout sessions.
A goal of ISSW in 2021 is to minimize our carbon footprint, which includes plans to reduce the use of cars as much as possible. A local shuttle will be available to service designated accommodations, and on-site parking will be limited. Airport shuttle service will also help reduce the impact of travel from Calgary, Cranbrook and Kalispell.
