ISSW Sustainability

Our Environmental Stance

ISSW 2020 is committed to providing a sustainable or ‘green’ event designed, organised and implemented in a way that minimises potential negative impacts and leaves a beneficial legacy for the host community and all involved.*

This commitment will apply itself in the following ways.

Waste Management

We are committed to providing a week long event which produces the minimum amount of unnecessary waste.

  • ISSW2020 has chosen to eliminate single use plastic and unnecessary packaging – all participants (including sponsors, suppliers, and attendees) are requested to make respectful choices in this regard and to highlight their commitment to environmental sustainability
  • Recycling & Composting bins will be located throughout the venue.
  • Volunteers will assist all attendees in directing all byproducts to the proper receptacles.

Transportation

To reduce the use of fossil fuels, transportation options will be offered to delegates as follows:

  • Shuttles from regional and international airports to our conference.
  • Daily local shuttles from local accommodations to the conference site.
  • Daily and weekly bicycle rentals.
  • A bike share program offered by Fernie residents.

We recognize that you may be extending your trip to the conference as an opportunity to explore our beautiful and diverse country. Please allow us to help facilitate the Fernie portion of your trip with collective transportation as outlined above.

Printing

ISSW 2020 will maximize information exchange with the use of digital media as outlined below.

  • All conference related information will be contained in or linked to our website ISSW2020.com or an ISSW2020 App.
  • Wifi will be available in onsite conference facilities.
  • Printed material will be limited to wall mounted posters in select locations at the conference. We will utilise recycled paper and vegetable based inks for these items and obtain them from local suppliers where possible.
  • Exhibitors are discouraged from distributing pamphlets and brochures to all attendees. Links to digital platforms are preferred. We recognise the value of print media however and encourage its use in focused and effective ways.

Food & Beverage

All food and beverages available at the conference will be provided as follows:

  • The high quality insulated cup which is provided by ISSW 2020 can be used for coffee, water and beer. Rinsing stations will be on site.
  • All food and beverages available at the conference will be served using reusable or compostable plates, bowls, cutlery and Napkins.
  • Vegetarian menu options will available and highlighted.
  • Seasonal/local/and organic food offerings will be prioritized.
  • Please bring your favourite water bottle with you!
