Abstract Submission Overview

ISSW is the premier international conference for snow scientists and professional avalanche workers. It brings together people conducting leading-edge research with those focusing on finding effective solutions to real-world problems—truly, a merging of theory and practice.

2021 brings this conference to Fernie, British Columbia, where we aim to continue the fulfillment of this concept. We plan to build a program comprising research-led as well as practice-based presentations in a wide range of snow and avalanche related themes.

We invite you to submit an abstract for either oral or poster presentation. By submitting an abstract to the ISSW, you are directly contributing to the core element of the conference—the exchange of knowledge and ideas between people. We encourage submissions from practitioners and researchers alike.

The themes for ISSW in 2021 are listed below. When submitting your abstract, you will be asked to select the theme you think best represents your topic.

  1. Avalanche Dynamics
  2. Avalanche Education
  3. Avalanche Forecasting
  4. Avalanche Formation and Failure
  5. Avalanche Incidents and Case Studies
  6. Avalanche Rescue
  7. Avalanche Risk Communication
  8. Climate Change and Sustainability

Abstracts must be in English, and should contain no more than 300 words, not including the title or authors. Abstracts may be submitted for either oral or poster presentation. Authors requesting an oral presentation may be offered a poster presentation if space and time constraints do not allow for an oral presentation. One image or table may be included in your abstract and should be attached in a .png or .jpg format. Including an image or table will count as 100 words. The abstract title should contain no more than 25 words.

Please ensure that all authors have agreed to publication of the abstract. The expectation is that all submitted abstracts will highlight new and original content.

Submissions from commercial organizations are encouraged, but must focus on explaining, testing or validating new or emerging techniques, products or approaches to problems. Submissions that are overtly commercial or focus on marketing products or services will not be accepted into the conference program.”

Abstracts should be submitted via the online submission portal on this website. Abstract submissions will be open in January 2021.

Prior to submitting, you will need to create an account, which you will also use to register for the conference.

Authors may submit multiple abstracts, but duplicate submissions on the same topic is not allowed.

Detailed instructions for how to submit an abstract will be available when the submission portal opens.

All authors of accepted abstracts are required to submit a proceedings paper. All accepted abstracts and proceedings papers will be published in the ISSW 2021 conference proceedings.

Further details, including paper length, formatting, and how to submit your paper will be provided closer to the submission date.
